VetDose Pro Help
Everything you need to calculate doses, set up equipment, and manage patients — organized by task.
1Getting Started
VetDose Pro is a dosage and equipment reference calculator for dogs and cats, built for licensed veterinary professionals.
- 1Sign in with your email and password, or with Google. New staff are added by an admin via an invite.
- 2If you have a tester code, redeem it on the Upgrade page for two months of Premium access.
- 3The amber banner at the top of the calculator is a standing reminder: all calculations are for reference only and must be verified by a licensed veterinarian before administration.
Dosages in the library are cross-referenced with Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, 10th ed.
2Getting Around the App
The app is a single screen with three tabs and a shared header. Everything is one tap away.
- 1Calculator tab: patient setup, drug selection, dose results, emergency panel, pre-anesthesia checklist, and custom drug calculator.
- 2Equipment tab: printable forms, equipment report, fluid rates, CRI, reservoir bag, breathing circuit, ET tube, and oxygen flow.
- 3Logs tab: protocol templates, saved calculation history, oxygen flow, IV catheter gauge, conversions, and lab reference ranges.
- 4On desktop, all three columns show side by side; on mobile, only the active tab is visible and the bottom nav switches between them.
- 5Header controls: dark/light theme toggle, Get Premium, and Reset (clears the current patient, drug, and inputs).
Tapping Reset clears the whole calculator — patient, drug, weight, and protocol. Use it only when starting a fresh case.
3Setting Up a Patient
A patient holds the species and weight that every calculation depends on. Set these first.
- 1Open the Patient card at the top of the Calculator tab.
- 2Pick Species: Dog or Cat. This filters which drugs and doses are available.
- 3Enter the patient's body weight. The unit toggle defaults to pounds (lb); switch to kilograms (kg) if you prefer.
- 4Optionally set the Sex / reproductive status (Male, Female, Neutered, Spayed).
- 5Tap Save to store the patient, or select a saved patient from the Recent patients summary to reuse it.
- 6Use Update to change a saved profile, or Delete to remove it.
Saved calculations can be linked to a patient, so the patient name appears in your history even if the profile is later deleted.
4Calculating a Drug Dose
The core of the app: pick a drug for the patient's species and weight, then read the safe dose range.
- 1In the Drug picker, search by name or filter by category.
- 2Tap a drug. If it has multiple variants (concentrations or dosing options), the variant selector appears below — choose the one that matches your formulation.
- 3The result card shows the dose range as mg/kg and the calculated mg dose, plus mL volume when a concentration is available.
- 4Read the Route, Frequency, and Notes for administration guidance.
- 5Tap Save Calculation to store the result in your history.
The drug search query resets when you leave the page — it is never stored.
MAC-based anesthetics (Isoflurane, Sevoflurane) show a vaporizer starting point instead of an mg dose.
Red safety alerts flag species toxicity, controlled-substance scheduling, and max-volume caps. Always heed them.
5Emergency / Crash Cart
Once a weight is entered, the Emergency shortcut panel pre-computes common emergency drug doses and volumes for the patient's species.
- 1Set the patient species and weight in the Patient card.
- 2Scroll to the Emergency shortcut panel — it appears automatically when emergency drugs apply to that species.
- 3Each card shows the drug, route, concentration, dose range, and calculated volume.
- 4If no weight is entered, the panel prompts you to add one.
6Protocol Templates (Premium)
Save and load reusable multi-drug protocols — for example a standard premedication or induction sequence.
- 1On the Logs tab, open Protocol Templates and enter a template name.
- 2Add each drug (and pick its variant where relevant), then save the template.
- 3To reuse, tap a saved template to load a single drug, or load the whole protocol at once.
- 4Loading a protocol that was saved for a different species automatically switches the calculator to that species.
- 5Tap the trash icon on a template to delete it.
Protocol templates are a Premium feature. Free users get a limited trial.
7Custom Drug Calculator (Premium / trial)
Use the custom drug calculator for a drug that is not in the built-in library.
- 1Enter the drug name and the dose rate in mg/kg.
- 2Optionally enter a concentration in mg/mL to also get the volume in mL.
- 3Set the route and frequency, and pick the species (there is a quick-select).
- 4Read the calculated total dose and volume for the current patient weight.
- 5Save the entry as a custom drug profile to reuse it later.
Custom drug calculator is a Premium feature with a limited free trial.
8CRI Calculator
Compute a continuous-rate infusion for either a syringe pump or a fluid-bag addition.
- 1On the Equipment tab, open the CRI calculator and pick the mode: Syringe pump or Bag addition.
- 2Choose the drug, set the dose, and confirm or override the concentration.
- 3For bag mode, choose the carrier fluid and bag volume, and set the fluid rate.
- 4Read the resulting mL/hr (syringe pump) or the volume of drug to add to the bag.
- 5Watch the drug–fluid compatibility notes and species cautions (especially cat-specific warnings).
9Fluid Rate Calculator
Determine hourly and daily fluid rates, dehydration replacement, and bolus ranges.
- 1On the Equipment tab, open the Fluid rate calculator.
- 2Choose a regime: Maintenance, Shock, Anesthesia, or Replacement.
- 3For replacement, adjust the dehydration percentage to estimate the deficit.
- 4Read the hourly and daily rates, plus the species-appropriate bolus dose range.
10Anesthesia & Airway Equipment
Right-size the hardware for the patient on the Equipment tab.
- 1Reservoir bag: sized by the 60 mL/kg rule of thumb.
- 2Breathing circuit: rebreathing vs. non-rebreathing, recommended by patient size.
- 3ET tube estimator: tube size estimated from species and weight.
- 4Oxygen flow rate: liters per minute for the chosen circuit.
- 5IV catheter gauge: a guideline gauge by patient weight.
11Pre-Anesthesia Checklist
A grouped checklist that appears when you select an anesthetic, sedative, or dissociative drug.
- 1Select a qualifying drug on the Calculator tab — the checklist panel appears below the dose result.
- 2Work through the groups: patient preparation, equipment, monitoring, and emergency readiness.
- 3Tap each item to mark it complete; the progress bar updates as you go.
- 4Reset to clear all checkmarks and start over.
- 5Print the completed checklist (a Premium / trial feature).
12Equipment Report (Premium / trial)
Generate a single patient-specific PDF covering equipment, dosing, protocol history, and emergency references.
- 1Set the patient species and weight, and choose the fluid regime.
- 2On the Equipment tab, open the Equipment report and tap Generate / Print.
- 3The PDF includes fluid rates, airway, catheter, oxygen, emergency doses, recent calculations, and the safety footer.
Equipment reports are a Premium feature with a limited free trial.
13Printable Clinical Forms
Print ready-to-use clinical forms, auto-filled with the current patient's data.
- 1On the Equipment tab, tap the Printable forms button.
- 2Choose a template (anesthesia monitoring, discharge instructions, dental discharge, and others).
- 3The active patient's species, weight, and name are auto-filled where relevant.
- 4Print directly from the preview; some templates use a custom footer while others omit it.
14Preventative Comparison Table
Compare common flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives by coverage and contraindications.
- 1Filter by Dog, Cat, or Both.
- 2Scan the coverage row for each product: a check means covers, a dash means partial, an X means no coverage.
- 3Tap a product row to expand its dosing, minimum age/weight, and contraindications.
The table sits full-width beneath the main dashboard on desktop, and inline within the Calculator tab on mobile.
15Reference Tools
Quick lookups on the Logs tab.
- 1Lab reference ranges: common hematology and chemistry ranges.
- 2Conversion table: common imperial-to-metric weight, volume, and dose-rate conversions.
Always verify conversions against your current formulary before use.
16History & Logs
Saved calculations live on the Logs tab. Note: this stores calculations you save, not your drug searches.
- 1Tap Save Calculation under any dose result to add it to history.
- 2Each history row shows drug, patient, dose, and species.
- 3Delete an individual entry, or clear all calculations at once.
- 4History is tied to your account and is private to you (admins can view for support).

20Troubleshooting / FAQ
Common questions and quick fixes.
- 1My saved calculation disappeared: a save that fails to reach the server rolls back automatically. Check your connection and try again.
- 2The pre-anesthesia checklist did not appear: it only shows for anesthetic, sedative, or dissociative drugs.
- 3My premium feature shows locked: your trial may be used up, or a tester-code entitlement may have expired.
- 4Why is the dose a range: the library shows a min-to-max safe dose; the app calculates both ends for the patient's weight.
- 5An update banner appeared: a new version was published. Dismiss it, or it will not show again.
WARNING: This calculator is for reference purposes ONLY. All calculations should be verified and authorized by a licensed veterinarian prior to administration. Dosages cross-referenced with Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, 10th ed.
